Giving Your Child a Voice: The Power of Newborn Hearing Screening

NHSRC News and Updates

There is an incredible, often overlooked journey that begins long before a baby’s first cry. Hearing actually starts in the womb, where infants can discern the steady rhythm of their mother’s heartbeat. From the moment of birth, every coo, giggle, and turn toward a familiar voice is a vital step in a child’s emotional and educational development.

However, hearing loss is a significant challenge in the Philippines, affecting approximately 1.3 out of every 1,000 births. Because it is often an “invisible” impairment, infants may appear perfectly healthy while being unable to hear the critical stimuli needed for speech and future learning.

The 1-3-6 Goal: A Roadmap for Success

To ensure every Filipino child has a fair start, the Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Center (NHSRC) advocates for the international 1-3-6 protocol:

  • 1 Month: Complete the initial hearing screening.1
  • 3 Months: If a baby receives a “Refer” result, obtain a formal diagnosis through confirmatory testing.1
  • 6 Months: Initiate necessary interventions, such as hearing aids or speech therapy.1

Simple, Painless, and Vital

Mandated by Republic Act 9709, newborn hearing screening is designed to be quick and painless, typically performed while your baby is asleep using advanced methods like Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) or Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR).

Even if your baby “Passes” their initial screening, it is crucial to continue monitoring their hearing milestones throughout their first year and beyond. Early detection is the key to unlocking a child’s full potential, ensuring they can connect with the world around them through the gift of sound.
